The Zwinger palace in Dresden, capital of the eastern German state of Saxony. It was ordered built in 1709 by the Saxon king Augustus II, and parts were added until the middle of the 19th century. It was extremely badly damaged during the Allied firebombing of Dresden in February 1945. Work on its reconstruction began immediately after the war, and work was largely completed by 1963. It is largely in the Baroque style.
