It was destitute of ascrew point, but it may have had ahollow pod and a cross head forming ahandle. The screw point was addedto the gimlet in course of time, andwithin our own recollection the twistedshank which makes it point was taken from the augerproper, which may be called a magni-fied gimlet, now that their specific fea-tures have become so closely assimi-lated in form and function.
