Amongst the mostvaluable qualities to be sought for in pigs of theLarge White, the Large Black and the GloucesterlihI Spot breeds of pigs are quality of bone, fle-hand hair, length and depth of body, comparativelightness of forequarters to hindquarters, thicknessa ml length of ham, squareness and length fromhips to tail, shortness of leg compared with size ofbody, width of head, without undue length, as Ihefirst, denotes vigour and brains and the lattergrowth without early maturity; thickness of flank,an indication of depth of flesh and free movement,since an animal which is not well built cannot movewith freedom and grace. Berkshires and MiddleWhites are not expected to be of so large size, sincethey come more quickly to maturity, but good onesof the breeds will posse
