Portrait shot south along Deansgate from Jackson's Row. 201 Deansgate, left mid-distance, is an office building development. Centre mid-distance, the red bricks Onward Buildings, with curved corners and yellow stripes of sandstone and yellow terracotta windows and doorways, was built in 1903-1904 by the Band of Hope, a temperance movement founded in Leeds in 1845. The name refers to 'Onward', the title of a Band of Hope newspaper, designed for children to reinforce the temperance way of life with material such as music, moral tales, stories and poetry. Although binge drinking is often seen a phenomenon of 21st century life, excessive drinking was a significant feature of life in the 19th Century. In the right background, the multi-use Beetham Tower, at 168 m (551 feet), is the tallest skyscraper in Manchester, and eleventh in the UK, Completed in 2006, it also one of the thinnest skyscrapers in the world.
