The Portmaster forwarded this application to the Government, and tho result was that Mr. Henry Ross, coxswain of the Water Police, was appointed to the charge of the patrol, and the Portmaster was instructed to select two other men. This crew began their duties some weeks ago, and in addition to looking after the carrying out of the harbour regulations with regard to tarpaulins, gangways, &o., they make a night patrol of the river. This latter duty they have carried out pretty regularly up to the present, and has already succeeded in showing the necessity for a boat's crew being constantly engaged in this way. Last week they obtained information which led them to believe that a portion of the cargo of the sanitary barge Mary was being discharged into the river at the wharf where she was lying very early one morning. Owing, however, to Mr. Pinnock having objected to bear the case because the summons had been issued from the South Brisbane Police Court, the case bas not yet been dealt with by the magisterial authorities. Yesterday morning at 3 o'clock, while patrolling the town reach of the river, the coxswain noticed a boat or punt moving along in tho shadow of the wharves. He hailed the occupant of the punt, hut there was no reply, the men only pulling the harder. The police boat gave chase, and after a rather sharp pull, overtook the punt, when they saw the man in the act of throwing a sack of flour over the side. There were five other sacks in the punt. On informing the man who they were he endeavoured to strike one of the police named Taylor, who was pulling the bow oar. After a sharp tussle the man was arrested.
