King penguins on the shore. A tourist cruise ship is in the background. King penguins (Aptenodytes patagonicus) are the second-largest of the penguins and can reach 95 centimetres in height. They live in large colonies, often consisting of many thousands of individuals, in island groups in the sub-Antarctic. These settlements are permanently occupied, as it takes 15 to 18 months for each pair to raise their single chick. The king penguin's diet is mainly composed of fish and cephalopods (such as squid).
