View of Mont Pelee, a dormant volcano on the Caribbean island of Martinique with its peak partly obscured by cloud, theatre ruins in the foreground

In 1902 Mount Pelee erupted without warning and completely engulfed the town of St Pierre killing almost all 28,000 of the town. Only 2 survived, one of which was being held in prison, the remains of which are seen in the foreground of this image. Seen as a divine intervention, he was forgiven his crimes and released a free man.
