. Negro folk rhymes : wise and otherwise ; with a study . t times, when in a reminiscent humor,I hum to myself some little songs of my occasions, afterwards, I have picked out someof the same tunes on the piano. When I have donethis I have always felt like giving its production onthe piano the same greeting that I gave a friend whohad once worn a full beard but had shaved. Mygreeting was Hello, friend A; I came near notknowing you. Quills were made in two sets. They wereknown as a Little Set of Quills and a Big Setof Quills. There were five reeds in the LittleSet but I do not know how many there were in aBig Set. I think there were more than twice asmany as in a Little Set. I have inserted a cut of aLittle Set of Quills. (Figure L) The fact that I304 NEGRO FOLK RHYMES was in the class of The Little Boy Who CouldntCount Seven when I saw and handled quills makesit necessary to explain how it comes that I am sureof the number of Quills in a Little Set. I re-call the intricate tune that could be played only by A LITTLE SET OF QUILLS. Figure I the performers putting in the lowest pitched notewith his voice. I am herewith presenting that tune, and blocking out the voice note there are only fivenotes left, thus I know there were five Quills inthe set. I thought a tune played on a Big Set305 NEGRO FOLK RHYMES might be of interest and so I am giving one of thosealso. If there be those who would laugh at thecrudity of Quills it might not be amiss to remem-ber in justice to the inventors that Quills consti-tute a pipe organ in its most rudimentary form.
