A gardener mowing his lawn in the UK – he is using a Barford & Perkins ‘Godiva’ hand mower and wears his gardening clothing. The Godiva was made by Barford & Perkins of Peterborough, Cambridgeshire, England, UK at the end of the 19th and start of the 20th centuries. It incorporated a device (Wansbrough’s Patent Height Regulator) introduced in 1902. This long connecting bar adjusted the height of the front wooden roller. This in turn altered the machine’s cutting height – a vintage Victorian/Edwardian photograph.

The Godiva was made by Barford & Perkins of Peterborough, Cambridgeshire, England, UK at the end of the 19th and start of the 20th centuries. It incorporated a device known as a ‘Wansbrough’s Patent Height Regulator’, introduced in 1902. This was a long bar connecting an adjusting wheel close to the top of the handles with a mechanism on the front wooden roller. Moving the adjuster raised or lowered the front roller – this altered the machine’s cutting height. Barford & Perkins was better known for its other products included steam engines, steam rollers and agricultural equipment. The last mowers were made in the late 1920s. The Perkins name survives today as part of a company manufacturing engines for commercial and agricultural vehicles. This is taken from an original black and white photograph. It will look soft if used too large – a vintage Victorian/Edwardian photograph.
