Acute lymphoblastic leukaemia. Light micrograph of blood cells from bone marrow in a case of acute lymphoblastic leukaemia. Leukaemia is a cancer where certain blood cells form in excess. There are several acute forms, classified according to the type of cell affected. Acute lymphoblastic leukaemia is a cancer where excess white blood cell precursors called lymphoblasts form in bone marrow. These precursor cells form a type of white blood cell called lymphocytes. These cells are large haemoblasts (hematopoietic stem cells).
