Yukiko Akaba and Atsede Baysa competing in the London Marathon. Yukiko finished 3rd for Japan, in a time of 2:24:43. Atsede finished 4th for Ethiopia, in 2:25:14. Yukiko Akaba, born 18 October 1979 in Haga, Tochigi, is a Japanese long-distance runner who specializes in the 10,000 metres, half marathon and marathon events. She won the silver medal in half marathon at the 1999 Summer Universiade. At the 2001 Summer Universiade she finished eighth in the 5000 metres and won the bronze medal in the 10,000 metres. She finished twentieth in the 10,000 metres at the 2008 Olympic Games, but was less successful in the women's 5000 metres, failing to make the final. Her next global competition came at the 2009 World Championships in Athletics, where she finished 31st in the World Championship marathon race. She also ran at the 2009 IAAF World Half Marathon Championships, but failed to make an impact in either the individual race or with the Japanese team. Atsede Baysa Tesema, also known as Atsede Bayisa, (born 16 April 1987) is an Ethiopian long distance runner who specialises in road running events. She has won the Chicago Marathon and Paris Marathon twice consecutively. She has also won at the Xiamen International Marathon and the Istanbul Marathon. She represented Ethiopia at the 2007 IAAF World Road Running Championships (taking the team silver) and at the 2009 World Championships in Athletics in the marathon race. She was the half marathon silver medallist at the 2007 All-Africa Games.
