John Paul Jones, a native of Scotland,who had been brought to Virginia at anearly age, was one of the first -naval officerscommissioned by Congress. He was givencommand of the Ranger, a vessel ofeighteen guns, and by his brilliant and daringexploits kept the English coast in a state ofterror, and even ventured to attack exposedpoints on the coast of Scotland.
