TheHttle apes, who grinned, chattered, frisked,and frolicked in the moonlight, around me,appeared like so many fantastic sprites, andI could scarcely believe that it was not alla dream. Never shall I forget some of theirquizzical countenances and grotesque ges-tures, as they peeped at me between thebranches of the trees. After they had hungaround me for several minutes, one of themuttered a shrill cry, and with many a leap,and jerk, and bound, they seemed to run along upon the trees,passing from the branches of one to anotheras easily as a rabbit upon the solid ground.
