Telstar 1 Before Launch
Bell Labs' Telstar I, the world's first communications satellite, was launched in 1962. A sphere roughly a yard in diameter and weighing 175 pounds, Telstar was powered by 3,600 Bell Solar Battery cells and dozens of other innovations from Bell Labs.
