John Selden MP (1584-1654)


Illustration from a special edition history of England published in 1903. After Daniel Mytens the Elder (). Along with John Eliot, Denzil Holles, William Strode and others Selden was arrested and imprisoned in the tower of London for his part in preventing the speaker from adjourning parliament on the King's orders insisting it was parliaments right to adjourn the house not the King's. Charles I then dissolved the house and resolved to govern without Parliament beginning the personal rule of Charles I ultimately leading to The English Civil War.
