The news of « deaon in Shanghai,China, of Alexander Maclean, tradecommissioner of the Canadian Govern-ment, which came in a cable datedHhang-hai, Dec. 22, has been receivedwith a great deal of regret by his manyfriends in the Dominion. The deceased. THE LATE ALEXANDER MACLEAN, Canadian Trade Commissioner inShanghai. was widely known throughout Canada,even prior to his appointment, Dec. 1st,1903, as trade agent at Yokahama,when the Government opened its firstagency in China. Mr. Maclean wasbarn in Brant County, Ontario, andafter teaching a short time in his earlymanhood, he became a newspaper writ-er. He established the Mitchell Reform-er, published The Cornwall Freeholderfrom 186.) to 1872, and represented The(Jlobc in the Parliamentary Press Gal-lery during the stormy period between18f2 and 1874. His next service innewspaper life was as publisher of theOttawa Times and his final venture injournalism was as managing director ofthe Montreal Herald. 34 During the past few months Mr. Mac-lean had been too ill to attend to hisduties in the east, but the departmentat Ottawa and his many Canadianfriends believed he was^ on the road torecovery.
