Dinslaken, Voerde, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany - Renaturation of the Emscher. On the right, new Emscher estuary into the Rhine. On the left, old former mouth is filled in. In the back the closed STEAG coal-fired power plant Voerde. The mouth of the Emscher into the Rhine was relocated from Dinslaken to Voerde, almost 500 meters to the north. Fish can now swim barrier-free up the new Emscher from the Rhine through a newly created floodplain. The Emscher has been completely free of wastewater since January 2022 following the construction of a parallel sewer. The river was previously an open, above-ground combined sewer with rainwater and wastewater.
