Termite mound. Termites are eusocial colonial insects mostly found in the tropics. The mounds they build are a combination of mud and chewed wood and can be several metres high. They can have a complex internal structure. This termite mound is an example of those found in Australia. These can reach a height of 6 metres, and be 30 metres across their base. The termites bore down below the surface to depths of up to 40 metres to find water. Photographed in Kaokoveld, Namibia, Africa
