Pocahontas saves John Smith. Pocahontas born Matoaka, known as Amonute, – 1617. Native American woman associated with the colonial settlement at Jamestown, Virginia. She married English settler John Rolfe. She died in Gravesend, in 1617, during a trip to England. She is said to have saved settler Captain John Smith from death when she interceded for him with her father, Powhatan, a local indigenous chieftain.
