Dec 31st 1906 - Birmingham's last steam tram taking its last journey whilst the tram lines are being ripped up behind it. At this time electricity had outdated not only horse power but also steam. The wagon at the back in the picture (but actually at the front in operation) is actually the bulky engine, complete with a large smoke stack. 843 Trams of all kinds in Birmingham ran from 1904 until 1953. They were all built by Birmingham Corporation and the tracks were leased to various 1 Jan. 1907 the City of Birmingham Tramways Company Ltd, a British Electric Traction took over.
