This image is from one of the only authorized collections of photography from the Škocjan Jame (cave) system in Slovenia. Photography in this UNESCO-protected site is prohibited without extensive coordination and difficult-to-obtain permission, making this the best collection available today. I have been able to travel all over the world shooting fantastic underground locations, but the Škocjan Jame set a new standard for majesty and grandeur. Entering into the chambers ignites the imagination; even on a tourist guided tour, the sheer volume of the space makes one feel isolated and reverent. It is easy to imagine a fantasy land when visiting, and one begins to wonder what lies in the gloomy depths or around the next dark corner. Magical underground cities with fantastic creatures -dwarves, goblins, trolls, drow, elves, orcs? Anything seems possible after visiting an enchanted cave system like this.
