Martin Aitken (born 1922), British physicist, in a laboratory. Aitken's work is in the field of archaeology, applying physics to develop and improve methods of dating archaeological artifacts. He worked at Oxford University, at the Research Laboratory for Archaeology and the History of Art. Areas of study that he pioneered included archaeomagnetism and thermoluminescence, leading to the use of these techniques worldwide in the 1970s, in geology as well as archaeology.
