Wind Blown Melaleucas, Bournda National Park. Infrared Image

I'd been out doing some colour work at Bournda, waiting for the sun to drop a little while I framed up some sand dunes. A cold front blustered in obscuring the sun, and making life difficult with sand blown everywhere. In half an hour the cloud disappeared leaving a blustery gale in its wake. I packed up and started returning to the car. Walking along a track lined with tall, bare trunked Melaleucas, there seemed to be a lot of clacking and groaning above me. As I looked up a swirling mass of trunk and limb jostled for position against the sky. Walking in amidst the tall trees I suddenly realised an opportunity. I had to be quick as the light was beginning to fade. I setup the tripod as low as possible and with a crooked neck composed a foot off the ground, my left ear brushing leaf matter. As all the trunks were swaying, some more violently than others, I knew nothing would be sharp and was hoping the infrared effect would bring out the patterns. Underneath clapping branches and falling twigs, I made multiple shots, each slightly different with varying wind strength before packing up and extracting myself from the maelstrom above to return home to a warm meal.
