An orangutan in forest at Semenggoh Orangutan Sanctuary nr Kuching Sarawak Malaysia

Orangutans survive only in the rainforests of Sumatra and Borneo, though mostly in the latter. They are highly endangered due to rapid destruction of their habitat, the tropical rainforests. Many have also been captured as babies and then kept as pets. Some have been returned to the wild through sanctuaries at Sepilok and Semenggoh, in Sabah and Sarawak states respectively of the Malaysian part of Borneo. Of these, many still return regularly to the sanctuary for additional food. This image shows one such orangutan, making a return visit to Semenggoh sanctuary (nr Kuching, Sarawak) at feeding time.
