The historic church at Fyfield in Essex

Seen here from the (liturgical)South West: the chancel is fourteenth century; most of the visible exterior is thirteenth-century and the tower is Norman. Situated near the River Roding, it can be reached from Chipping Ongar by walking along the Essex Way. There has been a bridge over the River Roding at Fyfield at least since mediaeval times. Perhaps its location on the road to London contributed to the village's prosperity; the large church with its central tower, unusual for Essex, must have been expensive to build. As late as the 1860s there was a coach from Fyfield to Aldgate every day except Sundays. Opposite the church, on the other side of the Willingale road, is Fyfield Hall, the oldest inhabited timber framed building in England.
