Retreat of the Helheim glacier in Greenland between 2001 and 2005, satellite image. These three views of the glacier show it on May 12 2001 (top), July 7 2003 and June 19 2005 (bottom). The glacier itself is the grey region at the left of each image. To its right is a narrow fjord filled with icebergs that have broken (calved) from the glacier's front. The glacier has retreated around four kilometres in the four years between the first and last images, having been in a relatively constant position until 2001. The retreat and speeding up of the glacier's flow are attributable to warming of the climate. These images were taken by the Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER) on Nasa's Terra satellite.
