Berthelot and thermodynamics. 19th-century illustration of the French chemist Marcellin Berthelot (1827-1907) carrying out an experiment with a bomb calorimeter. Another design of calorimeter is at left. Calorimeters are used to measure the energy produced during a chemical reaction. Berthelot carried out extensive work on such reactions, using calorimeters such as these. He published his work on thermochemistry in 'Thermochimie' (1897). This illustration is from 'Physique Populaire' (Emile Desbeaux, 1891).
