These manholes were neces-sary inasmuch as the sewers were laid on flat grades and the waterconsumption was to be reduced to a minimum, giving an increaseddanger of stoppage. The total length of 4 inch and 6 inch sewer pipewas 945 feet. A connection was made with the borough water main in Baltimorestreet, at the intersection of Brickyard lane. The main water linewas of wrought pipe 2 inches in diameter and was laid for the mostpart in the same trench as the sewer line. At points where it wasnecessary to lay the water line in a separate trench, the line wasplaced only about 6 inches below the surface of the ground.
