Thedistrict in which he located was a forest regionand there he hewed out a farm, clearing- awaythe timber in order to place the land under theplow. ? He was married to Miss Lucy Spraguein 1822. Upon the old family homestead thereAugustus Randell was reared early assistinghis father in the arduous task of developingnew land, while in the public schools he ac-quired his education. He was married there,September 28, 1844, to Miss Rebecca JaneMitcliell, a native of Pennsvlvania, born in. r7^^ /^^c^/^^ PAST AND PRESENT OF MAHASKA COUNTY. 367 Annslrong county. Following his marriageMr. Randell cngageil in farming in Gallia coun-ty anil there reared his family. In 1852 heleft fnr Illinois, driving three horses to awagon, and settled in Hancock county, wherelie joined an uncle who had been living theresince 1850. His father also subsequently re-moved to Illinois, .\ugustns Randell openedup a farm in Hancock county and there rearedhis family, giving his remaining days to gen-eral agricultin-al pursuits. He died in Bowen,November 17, 1895. at an advanced age, whilehis wife passed away in February, 1882. Theywere worthy people, respected and esteemed byall who knew them and Mr. Randell led a verybusy and useful life crowned with a gratifyingmeasure of success, which made him one of thesubstantial farmers of his community.
