This consists of a cylinder of wood covered atone end with leather; through this leather is passed astick running through the wooden cylinder, so fastenedthat it can be moved an inch or two, to and fro throughthe leather. Having heated the membrane of the drumto draw it tight, the stick is vigorously rubbed with wetleaves and it produces a weird growling noise which canbe heard at a great distance, and which has earned forthe friction drum among some tribes the title of thevillage leopard. Torday has placed specimens of thisinstrument, collected in various localities, and also of thenose flute in the British Museum.
