. Electric railway gazette . the currentgenerated by the motors and needed to apply the braking action is two-fold and especially rotating armature of the motor, instead of tuggingahead, with its fly-wheel action by its momentum, is itselfpulling back and more or less powerfully braking the carthrough the gears by the retarding effort of its magneticfield, while generating the braking current. The power, therefore, required to perform the work is taken from theenergy of the moving car. Not only is the car thusretarded, but the brakes arrest the motion of the wheelsdirectly with a powerful force under perfect control ofthe motorman. No new and strange device is intro-duced to the motorman ; the combined electric brakeand series parallel controller is the K2 controller slightly enlarged and provided with the necessary contactsto perform the operation described above. The brakemechanism is readily attached to the motor and axles—itconsists of a cast-iron disc keyed to each axle and a compac. CONTROLLER USED WITH ELECTRIC BRAKE. electromagnet facing each disc and attached to the motorframe and prevented from revolving by suitable maximum current in the brake circuit is regulated bv
