View ESE of the Clackmannan Stone, a sacred Iron Age whinstone boulder placed on top of a monolith in Main Street, Clackmannan, Scotland, UK. Reputed to have come from the foot of Lookaboutye Brae near the River Forth 1km to the S where it formed part of a sacred place & rallying point for the local Iron Age tribal group the Manau, known in Roman times as the Votadini. Clach Mannan is Gaelic for Stone of the Manau, but the boulder is sometimes known as The Stone of Mannan and said to be named after a pagan god. After being kept in Clackmannan Tower for many years, the boulder was placed on a monolith beside the Tollbooth and Mercat Cross in 1833. Shadow of Mercat Cross bottom L.
