And eachyear an oratorio is rendered during Holy Week,which involves hard work and painstaking practiceon the part of the choristers. Choral confessions,sung prayers, elaborate settings for the canticles,operatic performances in the anthem—all thesefind no favour at St. James. Nevertheless, theservice is choral, and where rubrical directions re-quire the congregation to sing provision is made forsinging by the choice of such simple yet eiTectivemusic as falls within the reach of the average it is a joy beyond the telling to hear a congre-. 4 THE CHOIR AND ORGAN 45 gation of one thousand persons pouring forth theirprayers and praises in the Churchs hymns. There have always been sympathetic friends andsupporters for the choir. When it was first con-stituted as a surpliced choir the late Mrs. CharlesPhillips provided the robes. Mr. Kilby and Wier were also warm friends, providingbooks, music, and other necessary late Rector, Canon EUegood, left the sum of$i,ooo, the interest of which is to be awarded tothe boys who, by regular attendance and diligence,show proficiency in their work. Practises are heldtwice a week—for the boys on Wednesday eveningsand for the whole choir on Friday evenings.
