The Pilgrims had celebrated the first Thanksgiving but underestimated how much food they would need for the winter. As the winter wore on, food supplies dwindled and new settlers arrived. A daily allowance of five kernels of corn was given to each person —hence the later tradition of placing five kernels of corn at each person's plate on Thanksgiving (a tradition continued by some today). In this 1890 illustration, the master of the house distributes the five kernels.
