Irkutsk, Russia - september 14, 2017- A square with a fountain in the city center

For more than three centuries Irkutsk architects with soul and love created a unique architectural ensemble around Tikhvin Square. Unfortunately, only in old photos you can see the Kazan Cathedral, the walls of which could accommodate up to five thousand parishioners. In 1932, the Soviet authorities decided that the building was unsuitable even for a museum room. In August, blasting began. To remove the wreckage of the cathedral, a narrow-gauge rail road was laid, simultaneously destroying the Epiphany Cathedral's Episcopal courtyard. Crushed stone was scattered over the area and rammed. As a result, the level of the square rose by a meter. The old look of the square disappeared along with its former names. It has been renamed several times: Kremlin, Spasskaya, Bogorodskaya, Tikhvinskaya, Gostinodvorskaya. Since 1935, it has been named after Kirov. In 1962, the square underwent a general reconstruction and turned into a square with a fountain in the center.
