Waldseemuller 1505 world map. This world map was produced by German cartographer Martin Waldseemuller (1470-1520) in around the year 1505. The Latin title of the map ('Orbis Typus Universalis Juxta Hydrographorum Traditionem') translates as 'The figure of the whole globe according to the tradition of hydrographers'. This map shows the great Western Ocean (Atlantic, left, Oceanus Occidentalis), and the Indian Sea (Mare Indicum). Africa is shown, with Asia and Europe. Part of South America is at lower left, and some of the islands of the Caribbean at far left. Greenland is shown as a peninsula of Europe. Newfoundland appears as an isolated island. The scale is in Italian miles. The complete atlas, combining maps based on Ptolemy's 'Geographia' and modern maps, was published in 1513. Others who worked on this atlas included Mathias Ringmann and Jacopo d'Angelo.
