Methodist Episcopal Church of Falmouth. T^HE first religious service held in this village under the direction of theMethodist Episcopal Church, was in the house of Capt. Stephen Swift,January 8, 1807. Captain Swift, when in Baltimore, had attended aMethodist meeting, and being favorably impressed with the service, whenhe returned home showed a commendable friendliness to the denominationby opening his house for Methodist meetings, and by cordially entertainingits pioneer preachers. Through the labors of Rev. Erastus Otis a societywas gathered in 1809; and two years later was incorporated as the MethodistSociety of Falmouth and Sandwich. In 1811 a house of worship was erectednear the cemetery east of the village, in 1829 William Nye deeded to theSociety a half acre of land near the central portion of the village. To thisthe church was removed. During the ministry of Rev. E. D. Trakey it wastaken down, and the present edifice erected upon the same site in 1848. Tothis a chapel addition
