Indeed, it mustbe a very old country, though it was new to thepeople who came here a little over a hundredyears ago. The new settlers wished to preserve these old Down the Ohio. 57 mounds. They built a fort upon one of them,thinking they could not find a better place. Theytook such good care that the mounds should notbe destroyed that very many of them are stillto be MOUNDS NEAR MARIETTA. III. THE NEW HOME. The fort which the settlers built was white-washed and looked very fine as the sun shoneon it. They dug a well inside the fort, thenbegan to clear the land and plant corn. They laid out a little town, which was calledMarietta. Then they made laws for their town,which were written out and nailed to a tree whereeverybody might learn them.
