The Smithsonian Castle, officially known as the Smithsonian Institution Building, is an iconic landmark on the National Mall in Washington, Designed by architect James Renwick Jr. in the Gothic Revival style, the castle was completed in 1855 and serves as the headquarters and visitor center for the Smithsonian Institution. The distinctive red sandstone building features crenellated towers, arched windows, and a central clock tower, making it a recognizable symbol of the world's largest museum and research complex. The Enid A. Haupt Garden, a public garden, lies in front of the Castle. Opened in 1987 as part of the Quadrangle Complex, it is named after philanthropist Enid Annenberg Haupt, who funded its creation. The garden comprises three distinct areas: the Parterre, the Moongate Garden, and the Fountain Garden. These spaces blend formal Victorian-style landscaping with contemporary design elements, featuring ornate fountains, seasonal flower displays, and carefully manicured lawns and shrubs. The Castle and Haupt Garden are integral parts of the Smithsonian complex on the National Mall, which includes numerous world-renowned museums and galleries. The Castle itself houses exhibits on Smithsonian history and provides information about all the institution's museums and research facilities. Together, the Castle and the Haupt Garden offer visitors a unique blend of architectural history, horticultural beauty, and educational resources, exemplifying the Smithsonian's mission to increase and diffuse knowledge.
