It was possible to excavate in full rock coverabout ft. of the tunnels eastward from theWeehawken Shaft and 22-5 ft. westward fromthe Manhattan Shaft. At these points cover was verv thin, and there shield of course, the decision as to the practicabilityof such plans rested with the board. Inasmuch as the shield method of construc-tion was required, the writer designed a shieldfor use in the North River tunnels. Tenth .\ 32d St. was closed, and the prop-erty formerly the street was bought by thetunnel company from the city of Xew church, rectory and school of St. Mich-aels, which was located on the west side ofNinth Ave., between 31st and 32d Sts., wasacquired by the tunnel company after it hadacquired property for and had built a similarinstitution on the south side of 34th St westof Ninth Ave. Probably the most interesting feature ofthis contract was the support and maintenanceof Ninth Ave., which has a three-track ele-vated railway structure and a two-track sur-face railway structure, on which it was neces-sary to maintain traffic while excavation wasmade to a depth of about fiO ft., and a viaductwas erected to carry Ninth .*\ve. The lengthof this viaduct is about 375 ft., and the steelwork and its erection was done apart fromthe North River division work, but all excava-tion
