Ana Maria Matute, Spanish novelist writer. Barcelona

Ana Maria Matute is born in Barcelona in 1926, her childhood was first marked by illness and, later, like that of many, by the consequences of the Civil War. Post-war Spain, seen through the eyes of a young girl, with its horrors, privations and miseries is a recurrent leitmotif in many of her novels. She published her first work, Los Abel. At just 17 she had already written and illustrated her first novel which was published 8 years later. Her work is a personal and unmistakable combination of reality and fantasy, social condemnation and poetic courage. She became a member of the Royal Spanish Academy in 1997 and received the prestigious Cervantes Award for all her work in 2010.
