The bedrock mines are few in number antl situatedon the southeast coast, which is the most accessible partof the territory. The chief one is the great Treadwellmine near Juneau, and there are also important minesat Berners bay, at the Island of Unga and other latest strike is the Klondike. Most of these mines,however, are in low-grade ore. and the production isonly made profitable by means of careful managementand operations on a very large COPPER RIVER, GOLD DISTRICT. BOOK FOR GOLD-SEEKERS. 235 The placer mines are those which occupy the mostprominent place in the popular mind, since they are re-mote from civilization and in a country about whichlittle is known, and which is, on account of this uncer-tainty, dangerously attractive to the average man. Thisgold-producing country of the interior is mostly in thevicinity of the Yukon river or of some of its immediatetributaries. The most productive districts before the Klondikediscovery have been the Forty Mile district, which liespartly in American and partly in British territory, andthe Birch creek district, which lies in American gold diggings are also supposed to exist on Stew-art river, and some gold has been shipped from theKoykuk. During the latter part of the past season dig-gings were also fovmd on the Klundek and Indian riversnear Forty Mile. Another place concerning which there have beenmany
