Robert Scott's Antarctic diary. Captain Robert Falcon Scott (1868-1912) writing his diary at his desk in the Winterquarters Hut in October 1911 during the British Antarctic Expedition (1910-1913). The photos at right are of his wife (Kathleen Scott, 1878-1947, married 1908) and his son Peter Scott (1909-1989). Also known as the Terra Nova Expedition, the primary expedition objectives were scientific. Led by Scott, the shore party of 34 spent two seasons exploring on and around the Ross Ice Shelf. Scott and four others died in 1912 returning from the South Pole. His diaries are now held at the British Library. Photographed by Herbert George Ponting.
