Brightly painted houses along a canal in Burano,Venetian Lagoon,Italy

Burano, in the Venetian Lagoon , is a myriad of tiny islands linked by bridges. It is near Torcello at the northern end of the Lagoon, and is known for its traditional lacework. Burano is also known for its small, brightly-painted houses, popular with artists. The colours of the houses follow a specific system originating from the golden age of its development; If someone wishes to paint their home they must send a request to the commune, who will respond by letting them know which colours are permitted in that zone. This has resulted in the myriad of warm, pastel colours that characterise the island today. Burano is situated 7 kilometers from Venice, 40 minute trip by Venetian boats, the "vaporetti." And is a favourite tourist destination. The population of Burano is about 4,000.
