All music is divided into equal parts, calld Measures, by lineslrawn across the staff, callM Bears. In every piece of the measures are, equal in time, one with another, whether thej are filled with notes or rests. This is a general rule withoutany exceptions. Notwithstanding, even should one strain of a j see of music close with a part of a measure, the next strainwill commence with the remaining part of the measure—the time will thus remain unbroken, and the beat will also correspond. Anotlier general rule without any exception, is in beating time viz: the foot must come down at the beginning of every mea-sure. There is no exception to these two rules, either in comm 1, triple or compound time.
