Health and Safety Laboratory (HSL) building at Harpur Hill, Buxton, Derbyshire, November 2004. This new building and site, opened in 2005, consolidated the HSL staff from other regions into one location for the first time since the early 20th century. The HSL was formed in 1995, but has a history at Buxton going back to 1927 when the Safety in Mines Research Board (SMRB) established a research site here. The Buxton research site, mostly demolished to make way for the new building, was later part of the Research and Laboratory Services Division (RLSD) of the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), formed in 1975.
