The marble sculpture of George Washington located in the Rotunda of the North Carolina historical Capitol building is a 1970 recreation of an original statue that stood in the statehouse from 1820 to 1831 when the building burned down. The statue depicts George Washington as a muscular young man, dressed in traditional Roman general clothing, writing his Presidential farewell.
