Hip anatomy, computer artwork. The large ear-shaped hip bone (opaque) is formed of three fused bones, the ilium, ischium and pubis. It articulates with the femur (thigh bone, right) to form the hip joint. The femoral head is covered in a synovial membrane (white), which encases synovial fluid (not seen), which helps to lubricate the joint. At the centre of femoral head is the round ligament of the femur (ligamentum capitis femoris, left is the sacrum, with the coccyx (tailbone) below it.
