His advantages of obtain-ing an education were limited to the country schools,and six months attendance at a private academy inEaston, Pa. At the age of twenty-four he was elect-ed register and recorder of Carbon county. In 1846he was chosen lieutenant incompany K, 2d Pennsylvaniavolunteers in the Mexicanwar, and afterward becameadjutant of the same regimentunder command of John He was with on his triumphant marchtoward the city of Mexico, andtook part in the battles at VeraCruz and Cerro Gordo. At!-5 the battle of Cerro Gordo hehad charge of the men whodelivered at Gen. Scotts head-quarters twenty thousand sil-ver dollars in bags, which werein a wagon captured from theMexicans.
