On the east branch of the range just north of the line is a most interesting andelaborate system of fortifications, formed of walls of lava about waist high and 2 or 3 feet inthickness, excellently located for defending the crest against assault. These fortifications weresaid to have been constructed by tbe Papagos for defense against Mexican troops when tbe regionbelonged to Mexico; but this is a mere tradition, which could not be verified.
